CHARACTER

NAME: Kal Kent (also known as Clark Kent)
CANON: DCAU
CANON-POINT: during the 'Beyond' timeperiod (2040), after the run of Superman Beyond

DOSSIER

HISTORY: Kal-El of the DCAU at the DC Wikia with an additional little bit here for the Superman Beyond stuff. Note: as covered in the second link, Clark/Kal's very slowed 'aging' doesn't just cause an 'issue' in his relationship with Lois Lane; Kal is a widow, as she became ill (it's hinted that it was cancer) and died, which prompted him to leave Earth for some years.

WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S STRENGTHS?: Kal (as Clark takes the name upon his return, to start a new life) has a genuinely good heart and he always tries his very best to do the right thing in any situation, eschewing his own personal desires and frustrations for the greater good. Despite the years of fighting the 'never-ending battle', having lost the love of his life, he never stopped trying to use what power he has to make the universe a better place. He's incredibly aware of the advantages that his abilities give him and does what he can to even the playing field and act responsibly, never taking advantage to give himself the upper hand for personal reasons. On a personal level, he's honest and genuine and he takes the time to try and get to know people even if he only spends a little bit of time with them. He loves people, always sees the best in them, always believes the best of them, even when they don't. On the flip side, though, he has no problem standing between good people and assholes, nor with cutting assholes right the hell down to size. Despite the fact that this gets glossed a lot, Kal's really really smart, and this goes for both his way of knowing people and his knowledge of the world; he knows dozens of languages, cultures, and plenty of history. He's also an excellent writer with a great way with words and he loves LOVES his writing passionately. On top of all of this, he's actually pretty humble, being very aware of the advantages he has and feeling very strongly that everyone is just as good as anyone else, with the same potential for good and greatness as people feel he has.

WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S WEAKNESSES?: As Bruce Wayne has noted more than once, Clark is a 'nice' person and while he can stand up to just about any kind of physical abuse you could ever hit him with, he's got an incredibly tender and sensitive heart. He takes his responsibilities and his power so seriously that it can cripple him, taking on burdens that no reasonable person would expect of him and blaming himself for almost anything. He constantly worries if he's doing the right thing at any given moment, and the amount of pain and heartache he hears with those ridiculous senses every day can wear on him. He has a bit of a temper when it comes to abusers and people who bully and more than once he's gotten very close to something he'd regret because of it, even if he always pulls out of it. Beyond that, the people close to him are his entire goddamn world and losing them or endangering them is a one way ticket to gutting him. He has frustrations about the fact that he has to hide, that he has to treat the world like tissue paper a lot of the time, that he's an alien and he'll never entirely belong, and these are another avenue that can be used to hurt him; alienation is a very real thing for him and it's a very sore spot in his heart. Good Superman stories focus on the fact that he's an immigrant, but not only is he that, but he's the immigrant who never saw his homeworld and has had to recreate it piecemeal from the pieces left to him by his family. What it boils down to is that he lives with a perpetual case of imposter syndrome from BOTH sides of his life, the human and the Kryptonian. While he IS very humble, he does get frustrated when it seems like he's not being taken seriously or when it seems like his point is being lost or obscured and he can occasionally be gruff of short with people, especially when he expected better of people.

WHAT EVENTS OR CIRCUMSTANCES IN YOUR CHARACTER'S PAST HAVE IMPACTED THEM THE MOST?: Well, being jettisoned from a dying planet is a pretty big one, as is having been picked up by his adopted parents. When you read a few AUs you really really get to appreciate the Kents, lemme say. More recent to this particular incarnation, the loss of his wife and his return to the world have made major impacts; the loss set him adrift, made him unable to be the Superman he wanted to be and returning after that time away made him feel even more disconnected and confused as to how he can really help. On the flip side, though, the reestablished friendship with Bruce Wayne and taking his place on the Justice League as a guide and leader has definitely helped him get his footing back.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR CHARACTER?: Hope. Forever and always, the hope of making the universe a better place for the future, saving everyone so that they don't feel the need to do terrible things, helping beings of all species and types to find their place and their path and their personal happiness. He wants to save everyone, even though he knows he can't, even though he knows that he has to let humanity and by extension the rest of the universe work some things out for themselves, and it's hard but he just doesn't have it in him to do anything else.

WHAT IMPRESSION DO OTHERS TEND TO HAVE OF YOUR CHARACTER?: Hokey. That's the first thing people can get: hokey and smalltown and a little dated in his beliefs about the way people ought to treat others and his positivity. He can come off as a bit a rube, gullible and awkward, and it would be easy to say that this is an act but it's not quite that so much as an incomplete picture. After they get through that, though, they'll find a warm heart, a deeply caring friend, or an incredibly attentive, loving partner. He CHERISHES people, to a length that some people can't quite comprehend as real, but it's 100% genuine. He respects and admires people and he makes no bones about it, doing his best to help people believe in their best self at every turn. After a while, they'll realize that he's also got a snarky sense of humor, a playful tendency to delicately fuck with people, and the occasional smug smirk when he figures his way out of things.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES THAT IMPRESSION DIFFER FROM WHO YOUR CHARACTER REALLY IS?: Funnily enough for an alien masquerading his entire life, what you see is a lot of what you get. All of the above is unabashedly true, though there's a sharper edge of anger and righteousness than he usually shows in there; only those who need to see it tend to see it and he's exceptionally careful about not punching down. What some people might not realize is how thoughtful he can be in some cases... and how oblivious he can be in others. Mostly that comes from being focused on his goals and on other people.

HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER HANDLE CRISIS OR ADVERSITY?: He's got a pretty good system of triaging. Priority is always to take care of people, make sure they're out of harms way or get them out of danger. Second priority is how to handle the threat or the problem, and he tries his best to balance getting in there and doing something about it with handling things intelligently. When it comes right down to it, though, he'll jump in and endanger himself immediately if he feels he needs to to prevent civilian death or injury, even if it's not tactically sound. He's got a tendency to do that for his teammates too, much to Batman's disapproval.

WHICH 5 THINGS WILL YOUR CHARACTER REMEMBER UPON ARRIVAL, AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?:
  1. His mother's recipes: because he deserves to have something familiar and comfortable that he knows how to make for himself.
  2. His last moments with Lois: because he'd be so angry if he ever forgot that and I can't see him ever forgetting it, even through the magic of RP
  3. His friendship with Bruce Wayne: Obviously he's not going to remember the whole thing, but remembering Bruce as his closest friend and best backup should make for fun given that there's a Bruce, but also because I want that to balance the Lois memory; someone who's still there.
  4. Kryptonian: He won't know what it is or why but I want him to remember his native tongue, mostly because it'll be fun to have him puzzled by it but also because I don't want him to lose that part of himself.
  5. Heat Vision: That one's important for not killing anyone since it's triggered by emotions so yeah, I want him to remember he can do that.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU FEEL WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?:

*deadpan* He's got a nice 'S'.

SKILLS, ABILITIES, & PHYSICAL WEAKNESSES: The laundry list is here, though the TL;DR version is: superfast, superstrong, super senses, flight, heat vision, freeze breath, invulnerability, and enhanced healing via sunlight AND vulnerable to kryptonite (of all colors) and magic (got a -6 to magic of any stripe, he's actually almost allergic to it)

INVENTORY:
his superman suit (the beyond one, in black and white)
a photo album with pictures of his life with Lois
his mother's pie bird
his wedding ring
his Legion ring
